How to Clean and Soften GOTS Organic Muslin Swaddles Without Damaging Fibres
How to wash organic muslin swaddle wraps is less about extra products and more about not fighting the cloth. GOTS organic cotton muslin starts slightly crisp. After a few correct washes it drapes. Caring for organic baby fabrics means cool water, a mild detergent, no fabric softener, and air drying whenever you can.
This is laundry and product care, not medical advice. For sleep, follow Red Nose: baby on the back, firm flat mattress, no loose blankets, pillows, or bumpers in the cot. A muslin used as a wrap is for when you are present and following current swaddle guidance. Once baby rolls, stop wrapping the arms.
If you need the wrap itself, the GOTS organic muslin swaddle in giraffe print is a 120 by 120 centimetre square that washes the same way as the rest of the range.
Why GOTS muslin feels stiff on day one
Double gauze is two fine layers of cotton loosely woven, then joined. New GOTS fabric has not been coated in the silicones that make cheap muslin feel instantly silky. That coating washes off anyway, and it can reduce breathability.
What you want is fibre that stays open. Softener gums the gaps. High heat shrinks and yellows. Overloading the machine leaves soap in the weave, which feels crunchy again when dry.
A first wash before baby uses it is enough. You are removing mill dust, not sterilising the cloth. Skip boiling unless a clinician has given you a specific reason.
For how certification sits behind the fibre, read what GOTS certification means for organic baby textiles.
The wash setting that actually works
Use a front loader if you have one. Top loaders with agitators are rougher on large squares.
- Shake the swaddle out so it is not a tight wad.
- Wash with similar cottons. Do not mix with towels that drop lint, or with jeans with metal bits.
- Cold or 30 degrees Celsius. Hot water is for the occasional milk or spit stain, not every cycle.
- Mild liquid detergent, less than the cap suggests. GOTS cotton does not need a heavy dose.
- Extra rinse if your water is hard or if baby has very reactive skin.
- Skip fabric softener, scent beads, and oxygen bleach tablets as a habit.
Wool or delicates cycles are fine if your machine is gentle. A normal cotton cycle is also fine if you do not overload.
If you also keep a dinosaur print GOTS muslin in rotation, wash them together. Same fibre, same dye family, less sorting.
How to soften muslin without softener
The cloth softens because the yarns relax, not because you add a product.
- Repeat washes. Three to five cycles usually change the hand feel.
- Tumble on low for ten minutes, then hang. The short tumble knocks the fibres. The hang finishes the dry without baking them.
- A splash of white vinegar in the rinse (a small cup, not a bottle) can help with detergent residue. It does not perfume the wrap. Rinse well.
- Do not iron on high. If you must press a gift fold, use steam and a cloth between iron and print.
If a wrap still feels board-like, it is usually leftover soap. Run a rinse-only cycle.

Stains: milk, mustard poo, and iron marks
Treat stains while they are damp.
Milk and formula: rinse cold, then wash. Hot water can set protein.
Poo: scrape, rinse cold from the back of the cloth, then wash. Avoid rubbing the print hard.
Blood (from a heel prick or cracked nipples on a nursing cloth you later wash with baby items): cold rinse first.
Never mix chlorine bleach with muslin you care about. It weakens cotton and can ghost the print.
If a mark remains after two washes, live with it or retire that square as a burp cloth. Muslin is a working textile.
Drying, folding, and storage
Hang in shade. Australian sun fades prints and can make white look harsh. A clothes airer indoors is enough.
Do not leave a wet swaddle in the machine overnight. Mildew smell is hard to shift and you should not perfume over it.
Fold into quarters and stand them in a drawer, or roll them. Either way, they should be fully dry. Damp cotton in a closed drawer smells.
Keep muslin out of the cot as loose bedding. Storage is for the wardrobe, not the sleep space.
When you are building a small organic set, browse organic and natural rather than buying five competing fibres at once.
How many wraps, and a laundry rhythm
New parents often think they need a dozen. Three to five large squares cover most weeks if you wash every second day: one on baby or in the pram (supervised), one spare, one in the wash.
Hospital week is messier. Pack two clean wraps. Wash when you get home rather than using hotel irons or unknown detergents.
A simple rhythm:
- Morning: hang yesterday’s wash.
- Evening: start a small load with the day’s muslin, singlets, and bibs.
- Do not wait for a “full” load of only swaddles. Pair with other cotton baby clothes.
Technique for wrapping, when you still swaddle, is in how to swaddle your newborn step by step.
What not to do
Do not dry clean. Solvents are pointless on cotton gauze.
Do not use fabric softener “just once for the gift photo.” It stays in the yarn.
Do not peg only one corner in a high wind. The cloth can tear at the peg hole. Use two pegs on a folded edge.
Do not use the wrap as a cot duvet, pillow, or bumper. Red Nose is clear on loose items in the sleep space.
Do not boil GOTS muslin weekly “to sanitise.” Heat plus detergent is enough for ordinary use.
Travel and second-hand muslin
Hotel machines are often hot and full of other people’s softener. Hand wash in a sink with a tiny amount of your own detergent, rinse hard, hang over the shower.
Op-shop muslin of unknown fibre is a different product. If it pills like polar fleece, it is not GOTS gauze. Wash separately the first time if you still use it as a picnic cloth, not as a newborn wrap.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a GOTS muslin swaddle in a hot wash for nappy leaks?
Once in a while, 40 degrees is reasonable. Daily hot washes age the cloth. Pre-rinse the mess, then use your normal cool cycle.
Will vinegar damage the giraffe print?
A small amount in the rinse is used by many households. Do not soak overnight in vinegar. If in doubt, skip it and use an extra water rinse.
Why did my swaddle shrink?
Heat. Tumble dryers on high and hot irons pull cotton in. Low tumble plus line dry keeps size closer to 120 centimetres.
Is fabric softener ever OK for baby with dry skin?
It is not a skin treatment. Residue can irritate some babies and it reduces breathability. If skin is a concern, speak with your child health nurse or GP. Use less detergent, not more perfume.
A muslin that lasts is one you wash like a good tea towel: often, gently, and without a cupboard of extras. Start with the giraffe GOTS organic muslin swaddle and keep a second print in the same fibre so laundry stays simple.
