Winter brings a particular kind of parenting anxiety that warmer months don't — how do you keep a newborn warm enough without crossing into overheating? It's a real balance, and it matters more than most new parents realise.
Newborns can't regulate their own body temperature the way adults can. They lose heat quickly through their heads, they can't shiver to warm themselves, and they have a limited ability to tell you when something is wrong. Getting the sleep environment right in winter is one of the most impactful things you can do in those early months.
The Target Temperature Range
Red Nose Australia — the leading authority on infant safe sleep — recommends keeping your baby's sleep environment between 16°C and 20°C. This applies all year, but winter makes it harder to maintain, especially in unheated bedrooms or older homes.
If you're comfortable in a light jumper or long-sleeve top, the room is likely in the right range for your baby. A room thermometer is a worthwhile investment — it removes all the guesswork.
How to Layer for Winter Sleep
The general rule: one more layer than you're wearing. But layering well matters as much as layering enough.
Newborns (0–3 months): A close-fitting onesie under a GOTS-certified organic muslin swaddle is the most common combination for mild winter nights. For colder nights, add a light organic knitted blanket tucked firmly under the mattress with arms free.
3–6 months: Transition to an age-appropriate sleeping bag over a bodysuit, with a fitted cot sheet underneath.
6 months+: Sleeping bags remain the safest option. A well-fitted cot sheet and, if needed, a light blanket tucked in at the foot and sides.
What to Avoid
- Loose blankets for newborns. Loose bedding is a suffocation risk. Use swaddles or sleeping bags for the youngest babies.
- Too many layers. Overheating is a known SIDS risk factor. Feel the back of the neck or torso — not the hands or feet — to check temperature.
- Hats indoors. Babies release excess heat through their heads, and an indoor hat prevents this.
Winter Bedding Essentials
Fitted Cot Sheets
Loose sheets bunch, shift and create risks. A properly fitted woven cotton sheet stays flat through the night. Our fitted cot sheets are cut specifically for standard AU/NZ cot mattresses (132 x 72cm) and come in three soft designs:
Organic Muslin Swaddle
For newborns, a breathable swaddle is the safest warm-sleep option. The open weave of a muslin swaddle lets heat escape when needed while keeping your baby snug. Our Organic Muslin Swaddle in Elephant and Giraffe Muslin Swaddle are both GOTS-certified — free from synthetic dyes and harsh chemicals.
Organic Cotton Knitted Blanket
For an extra layer of warmth over a sleeping bag, our Knitted Baby Blanket in Heart and Knitted Baby Blanket in Bear are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. Warm without being heavy — a key distinction for safe winter layering.
Minky Blanket Sets
Once past the newborn swaddle stage, a soft minky blanket as a top layer (always tucked in, never loose) adds warmth without trapping heat. Our minky sets are available in three designs:

How to Read Your Baby's Temperature Cues
| Sign | What It May Mean |
|---|---|
| Sweating, damp hair, flushed cheeks | Too warm — remove a layer |
| Cool hands and feet only | Usually normal in infants |
| Cool tummy or back of neck | May need an extra layer |
| Pale or mottled skin | Potentially too cold — add a layer and monitor |
| Unsettled and won't calm | Check temperature first |
The back of the neck and the torso are your most reliable temperature checks — not the hands or feet.
